I added a border, my tree and a green gradient. My placed the tree in thee lightest part of the gradient, so that it would stand out better and distorted the text.

GIMP: Chapter 6: Erasing and Touching Up
PART 1: READ Chapter 2 in the GIMP book, then:
  1. Answer all questions below, briefly but completely.
  2. Change the color of the answer to BLUE.
  3. Copy this information and paste in a new post in your DIGITAL GRAPHICS blog.

1.     What is the purpose of the DODGE tool (part of the DODGE/BURN tool) : Main purpose is to make the darker areas appear lighter.
2.     What is the purpose of the BURN tool (part of the DODGE/BURN tool): To prevent white areas from becoming too bright, by making them darker.
3.     Why is the DODGE/BURN tool considered a drawing tool? Because it uses a brush, letting you make changes directly on the image verses in a dialog box.
4.     What is the purpose of the SMUDGE tool? It can allow you to smudge surroundings to hide objects in an image, or smear objects to create effects within image.
5.     Briefly explain you get the CLONE to work: By first holding CTRL  and clicking on surrounding color in which you want to replicate and then click again area you want to clone, leaving behind the color you have chosen.
6.     What is the purpose of the HEAL tool? It can add texture back to an area that has been erased.
7.     What is the purpose of the PERSPECTIVE CLONE tool? Like the Clone tool, it allows you to adjust an image that has scenes or objects that extend away or up from the bottom.
8.     Briefly explain the two purposes of the CONVOLVE tool: Allows  you to blur or sharpen certain areas of an image that are out of focus, including the background.
9.     What is the purpose of the GAUSSIAN BLUR filter? (NOTE: This is a FILTER, not a TOOL). Sort of like the Convolve tool, it is a filter that can the blur  part or all of a photo.
10.  Which tool would be the appropriate tool to get rid of wrinkles on someone’s face? The Clone tool is affective for removing wrinkles.

GIMP: Chapter 7: Filters and Effects
PART 1: READ Chapter 2 in the GIMP book, then:
  1. Answer all questions below, briefly but completely.
  2. Change the color of the answer to BLUE.
  3. Copy this information and paste in a new post in your DIGITAL GRAPHICS blog.

NOTE Regarding the Xtns menu: In Chapter 7, the author discusses the difference between FILTERS and EXTENSIONS found in the Xtns menu. The Xtns menu does not exist in GIMP any longer; the items have been moved to other menus.
1.     What is a filter? It is an operation that can be applied to image, to give a wide variety of effects to the image.
2.     What is the difference between a TOOL and a PLUGI-N? Plugins have to adjusted from within the dialog box, as with a tool you can click and adjust within the image itself.
3.     What is the purpose of motion blur? It gives you the impression that the object in an image is moving or in motion.
4.     Briefly describe the purpose of the following ENHANCE filters:
·       Antialias: Helps to make jagged lines that are drawn to look smoother.
·       Despeckle: Removes elements of “noise” or speck, and small lines caused by scratches or dust on a scanner.
·       Destripe: Will remove vertical lines that are commonly left by some of the older scanners.
·       NL Filter: Has the ability to try and fix all the above issues.
5.     Briefly describe the purpose of the following  DISTORT filters:
·       Blinds: Makes image appear as if has been painted on venetian blinds, in which you can adjust the angle of the blinds.
·       Curve Bend: Allows you to drag line in a dialog box to change the shape of an image into desired shape.
·       Engrave: Creates a black and white “engraved” look, allowing you to adjust height and width of lines used.
·       IWarp: Allows you to transform or warp an object in image making it appear smaller

6.     Briefly describe the purpose of the following  filters:
·       Polar Coords: Can wrap an image around a point  at the top or bottom center, or unwrap. It also wraps text in a circle.
·       Ripple: Makes it appear as if you are seeing the image through water.
·       Lens Flare: You can click or drag in preview to set a “flare” where you want in the image.
·       Supernova: Like Lens Flare, but adds spiky rays to the flare.
·       Drop Shadow: Represents a shadow that is tilted an angle to show perspective.
·       Glass Tile: Makes it appear as if you are viewing image through a wall of glass bricks or tiles, each of which reflect light differently.
7.     Describe various ways the EDGE filters are used in GIMP: There are six different edge-detection algorithms, each a little different.  It gives a wild neon effect.  The more colors the more “neon” effect will be and wrap, smear and black are options controlling the effect at the edges of the image.
8.     What does the FILMSTRIP filter do? Allows you to see or view each layer of the image as a single image in a strip that looks like a 35 mm film.
9.     List and describe 5 filters found in the ARTISTIC filters group:
a. Apply Canvas: Gives texture to an image making it appear as if it were on a canvas.
b. Cartoon Filter: Makes a photograph look like a hand-drawn and inked cartoon, by simplifying colors and adding black outlines near edges.
c. Predator: Gives it sort of a digital video game appearance from the 80’s, or scene of the movie “Predator.”
d. Weave: Makes image appear as if it had been woven into a basket.
e. Photocopy: Can make image look as though it had the properties of an image that had been copied using a poor quality copy machine.

10.  What does the FRACTAL EXPLORER do? Allows you to create patterns in which you can adjust along with colors, shapes and sizes.

11.  What does ALPHA TO LOGO do? Allows you to add or create a wide variety of effects to your text layer or any layer with transparency.

PART 2: GIMP PROJECTS:
Be sure to save these images in your GIMP folder before inserting them in this document.
1.     WARP text:
1.     Create a new GIMP image that is 600  X 400.
2.     Use the paintbrush, gradients, etc. to create a lovely background.
3.     Click on the text tool (letter A), and change the font, color (to coordinate with the background), change the size to fairly large (at least 200).

5.     Warp the text: Make sure you are on the text layer. Now: FILTERSàDISTORTSàBEND CURVE. Drag the base line up/down to make it wavy. Click on PREVIEW ONCE to see the text distorted. When the text is distorted the way you want, click OK.
6.     You can also add a Drop Shadow if you like: FILTERSàLIGHT AND SHADOWàDROP SHADOW.

GIMP: Tribal Tattoo

I had a rough time getting the skin color to match through cloning. Otherwise this one was pretty easy.
I was not sure what this one was supposed to even look like. I removed the eye and used the threshold feature to make it black and white.

I choose to leave the strap on this since it did not turn out well for me the first time, and just added a pretty flower tattoo. I duplicated the layers and tried to adjust to make it look more real.
