What
is the purpose of the DODGE tool (part of the DODGE/BURN tool) : Main purpose is to make the darker areas appear
lighter.

What
is the purpose of the BURN tool (part of the DODGE/BURN tool): To prevent
white areas from becoming too bright, by making them darker.

Why is the DODGE/BURN tool
considered a drawing tool? Because it uses a brush, letting you make changes
directly on the image verses in a dialog box.

What is the purpose of the SMUDGE
tool? It
can allow you to smudge surroundings to hide objects in an image, or smear objects
to create effects within image.

5. Briefly explain you get the CLONE to work: By first holding CTRL and clicking on surrounding color in which
you want to replicate and then click again area you want to clone, leaving
behind the color you have chosen.

6.
What is the purpose of the HEAL
tool? It
can add texture back to an area that has been erased.

7.
What is the purpose of the
PERSPECTIVE CLONE tool? Like the Clone tool, it allows you to adjust an image
that has scenes or objects that extend away or up from the bottom.

Briefly explain the two
purposes of the CONVOLVE tool: Allows you to
blur or sharpen certain areas of an image that are out of focus, including
the background.

What is the purpose of the GAUSSIAN
BLUR filter? (NOTE: This is a FILTER, not a TOOL). Sort of like the Convolve tool, it is a
filter that can the blur part or all
of a photo.

10.
Which tool would be the appropriate
tool to get rid of wrinkles on someone’s face? The Clone tool is affective for removing
wrinkles.

What
is a filter? It
is an operation that can be applied to image, to give a wide variety of
effects to the image.
|
2.
What is the difference between a
TOOL and a PLUGI-N? Plugins have to adjusted from within the dialog box, as
with a tool you can click and adjust within the image itself.
|
3.
What is the purpose of motion blur? It gives you the impression that the
object in an image is moving or in motion.
|
4. Briefly describe the purpose of the following ENHANCE filters:

Antialias: Helps to make jagged lines that are drawn
to look smoother.
·
Despeckle: Removes elements of “noise” or speck, and
small lines caused by scratches or dust on a scanner.
·
Destripe: Will remove vertical lines that are
commonly left by some of the older scanners.
·
NL Filter: Has the ability to try and fix all the
above issues.

5.
Briefly describe the purpose of the
following DISTORT filters:
·
Blinds: Makes image appear as if has been painted
on venetian blinds, in which you can adjust the angle of the blinds.
·
Curve Bend: Allows you to drag line in a dialog box
to change the shape of an image into desired shape.
·
Engrave: Creates a black and white “engraved”
look, allowing you to adjust height and width of lines used.
·
IWarp: Allows you to transform or warp an object
in image making it appear smaller

Briefly describe the purpose of the
following filters:
·
Polar Coords: Can wrap an image around a point at the top or bottom center, or unwrap. It
also wraps text in a circle.
·
Ripple: Makes it appear as if you are seeing the image
through water.
·
Lens Flare: You can click or drag in preview to set a
“flare” where you want in the image.
·
Supernova: Like Lens Flare, but adds spiky rays to
the flare.
·
Drop Shadow: Represents a shadow that is tilted an
angle to show perspective.
·
Glass Tile: Makes it appear as if you are viewing
image through a wall of glass bricks or tiles, each of which reflect light
differently.

7.
Describe various ways the EDGE
filters are used in GIMP: There are six different edge-detection algorithms, each
a little different. It gives a wild
neon effect. The more colors the more
“neon” effect will be and wrap, smear and black are options controlling the
effect at the edges of the image.

8.
What does the FILMSTRIP filter do? Allows you to
see or view each layer of the image as a single image in a strip that looks
like a 35 mm film.
|
9.
List and describe 5 filters found in
the ARTISTIC filters group:
a. Apply Canvas: Gives texture to an image
making it appear as if it were on a canvas.
b. Cartoon Filter: Makes a photograph look
like a hand-drawn and inked cartoon, by simplifying colors and adding black
outlines near edges.
c. Predator: Gives it sort of a digital
video game appearance from the 80’s, or scene of the movie “Predator.”
d. Weave: Makes image appear as if it had
been woven into a basket.
e. Photocopy: Can make image look as though
it had the properties of an image that had been copied using a poor quality
copy machine.

10.
What does the FRACTAL EXPLORER do? Allows you to
create patterns in which you can adjust along with colors, shapes and sizes.

11.
What does ALPHA TO LOGO do? Allows you
to add or create a wide variety of effects to your text layer or any layer
with transparency.

PART 2: GIMP PROJECTS:
Be sure to save these images in your GIMP
folder before inserting them in this document.

1. WARP text:
1.
Create a new GIMP image that is
600 X 400.
2.
Use the paintbrush, gradients, etc.
to create a lovely background.
3.
Click on the text tool (letter A),
and change the font, color (to coordinate with the background), change the
size to fairly large (at least 200).
4.
Type your first name in the text box
(this creates a new layer with your name on it).
5.
Warp the text: Make sure you are on
the text layer. Now: FILTERSàDISTORTSàBEND CURVE. Drag the base line up/down to make it wavy. Click on
PREVIEW ONCE to see the text distorted. When the text is distorted the way
you want, click OK.
6.
You can also add a Drop Shadow if
you like: FILTERSàLIGHT AND SHADOWàDROP SHADOW.
7.
Crop the image if needed, then save
the image.
