GIMP: Chapter 4: Drawing
PART 1: READ Chapter 4 through page 139  in the GIMP book, then:
  1. Answer all questions below, briefly but completely.
  2. Change the color of the answer to BLUE.
  3. Copy this information and paste in a new post in your DIGITAL GRAPHICS blog.

1.     In the NEW IMAGE dialog box, how can you begin with a TRANSPARENT image rather than an image filled with the background color?
By expanding the ‘Advanced Options’ tab in the New Image dialog, you can choose to fill with color or make it transparent.
2.     What is the COMMENT box in the NEW IMAGE dialog box for?
This feature allows you to be able to label your image, either with name or title, copyright information ect.

3.     When you draw new objects in GIMP, why is it advisable to create them on a new layer?
It makes it easier to make changes to when it comes to adding or changing background colors and so forth.
4.     Briefly describe these properties found in the NEW LAYER box:
·       Layer Name: This feature allows you to choose a memorable name for your ‘layer.’
·       Width and Height:  This feature will auto adjust size to default.
·       Layer  Fill Type: This feature will default new layer to transparency but may be changed as well.
5.     Briefly describe the purpose of the following drawing tool options:
·       Mode: This offers same list of modes as layers dialog, plus a few “special” drawing tool modes.
·       Opacity: This will make the tool’s line more transparent, percentage 0-100%
·       Scale: This will let you change the size of the brush from bigger to smaller.
·       Fade out: This allows you to fade out a line after a specified distance.
·       Jitter: This adds some randomness to your line, giving it more of a natural look.
·       Incremental: This will make line more opaque, if opacity is less than 100%
·       Use color from gradient: This uses the gradient instead of current foreground color.
6.     What is a graphics tablet and what is used for? Can tablets be used with GIMP?
A drawing tablet or graphics tablet, are devices that include a pad, stylus, and sometimes a mouse or additional buttons. They are used by professionals because using a pen or stylus allows for a more natural drawing and offers more control over shapes. They are also sensitive to pressure which can have an impact on the size, or darkness of the line. They are tilt sensitive as well, which impacts the drawing and look of the line. It obviously can be used with GIMP, but has it limitations as well.
Drawing Tools:  Briefly describe what each of these drawing tools is used for:
1.     Pencil: Allows you to draw using sharp-edged lines.
2.     Brush: Gives you control over the width and shape of the line you draw, and spacing.
3.     Airbrush: Uses large, hard-edge slanted calligraphic brush that is time sensitive and appears with fuzzy edges.
4.     Ink Pen: Will emulate an old fashioned fountain pen with replaceable tips.
5.     Eraser: Erases while leaving either transparent or color layer behind.
6.     Rectangle Select: By making this selection, you can then fill or stroke to create desired shape.
7.     Lasso: Lets you draw a freehand selection of any shape.
8.     Bucket Fill: Allows you to click anywhere inside your selection or layer to fill it with foreground color.
9.     Blend: Another feature for filling in areas, example using gradients.
